How to Set Your Instagram Rate Card in India (Real ₹ Numbers for 2026)

Most Indian creators undercharge by 40-60%. Here's the formula and the real numbers.

💰

If you've ever quoted a brand a price and immediately wondered "was that too low?" - you're not alone. Most Indian creators undercharge, not because they don't value their work, but because there's no clear benchmark for what Instagram content actually costs in India.

Unlike US creators who have dozens of rate guides to reference, Indian creators are largely guessing. That ends here. This guide gives you the real ₹ numbers for 2026, the formula brands actually use to evaluate your rates, and how to build a rate card that makes you look like a professional from the first pitch.

Why follower count is the wrong starting point

Most creators price themselves by follower count. "I have 50K followers so I should charge ₹5,000 per post." The problem? Brands don't buy followers. They buy attention and conversion.

Two creators with 50K followers can have completely different market values:

  • Creator A: 50K followers, 1.2% engagement rate, lifestyle niche
  • Creator B: 50K followers, 7.8% engagement rate, fitness niche

Creator B could justifiably charge 3-4× more than Creator A. Their audience is more engaged, more niche-specific, and more likely to act on a recommendation.

The three things that actually determine your rate:

  1. Engagement rate - how much your audience cares
  2. Niche - tech and finance pay more than general lifestyle
  3. Audience location - Mumbai/Delhi audiences are worth more to most Indian D2C brands than tier-3 city audiences

The formula Indian creators should use

Here's a simple starting formula for Instagram Reels (the most commonly booked format):

Base rate = (Followers ÷ 1,000) × ₹100-150

Then apply multipliers:

  • ×1.5 if your engagement rate is above 5%
  • ×1.3 if your niche is finance, tech, or B2B
  • ×1.2 if 60%+ of your audience is in metro cities
  • ×0.8 if your engagement rate is below 2%

Example:
Creator with 30K followers, 6% engagement rate, beauty niche, 70% metro audience:

  • Base: (30,000 ÷ 1,000) × ₹125 = ₹3,750
  • ×1.5 (high engagement) = ₹5,625
  • ×1.2 (metro audience) = ₹6,750
Rate for one Reel: ₹6,500-7,000

These are starting ranges - high engagement rate, strong niche fit, or usage rights can push you above the top of your tier.

What changes your rate (multipliers that matter)

Usage rights
If a brand wants to repost your content on their own page or run it as a paid ad, add 40-80% on top of your organic rate. Paid usage rights are a completely separate negotiation from the original post.

Exclusivity
If a brand asks you not to work with competitors for a period (30/60/90 days), that's worth an additional 20-30%.

Turnaround time
Rush requests (under 48 hours) justify a 15-25% premium.

Multi-post bundles
Brands often want a bundle (1 Reel + 3 Stories + 1 feed post). Price each element separately, then offer a modest 10% bundle discount - not a 30% one. Many creators undercut themselves badly here.

The biggest mistake: not knowing your engagement rate

Brands with any experience always check engagement rate before they check follower count. If you don't know yours, you can't negotiate confidently.

Engagement rate = (Likes + Comments) ÷ Followers × 100

Anything above 3% is solid. Above 6% is excellent and should be priced accordingly regardless of follower count.

If you don't know your real engagement rate, or want brands to see it instantly instead of asking you for it - that's exactly what a live media kit solves. It shows your real numbers automatically, no back-and-forth required.

Use a calculator, not guesswork

Manually calculating multipliers for every brand conversation is slow and inconsistent. This is exactly why we built the KollabKit Rate Calculator - it factors in your followers, engagement rate, niche, and location to generate a defensible rate range in seconds.

Put your rate card in your media kit, not just your DMs

Once you know your numbers, don't just quote them verbally. Put them in your media kit. Brands respect creators who share rates upfront - it signals you know your worth and removes the awkward back-and-forth of "what's your budget?" emails.

KollabKit generates a live media kit with your rate card built in, pulled from your real Instagram data.

The bottom line

Indian creators consistently undercharge because there's no standard reference point. Now you have one. Price from your engagement rate and niche - not just your follower count - and don't be afraid to hold your rate when a brand pushes back.
